Serious Face

Last wednesday I spent the afternoon with a graduate photographer, Emily Nicholls, and two lovely models. It was a really interesting experience for me because it was my head being pulled out into realisation. You would think I'd be used to that because of my making, but the weird thing was seeing others being the ones to realise it. All I did was 'dress' the models (put brooches on or off of them) and hover around excitedly.

The outcomes are outstanding. I love them, and I definitely recommend Emily Nicholls as a photographer! To see the official images, see my Portfolio page.

I went for two gorgeous but contrasting models; Owen, who has a lot of hair, and Amy, who has very little. Together (and apart) they just work with the feel of the brooches. I also love the shots where they let me pin things to their back and sides, and in unusual places. I wanted to challenge the standard placement for a brooch, and also play with the ideas within my concept of overlooking the value of something. Weirdly, this relates full circle back to my final piece from 1st year, when I made a back necklace to symbolise the memories we may no longer be able to access, and the past we've left behind.

I wanted the feel of the shoot quite strong, but at the same time clean and clinical in the lighting and colour palette. I was also very specific in how I wanted the clothes to look, which meant several hours online searching for the correct garments. I bought two shirts each for the models but only used the one on both of them, also I didn't utilise amy's shirt in the way I wanted in my head, but we got there though! Sometimes it's when you put things into practice that you realise they don't work so well.

I'm very thankful to both my models and Emily, and I look forward to seeing the way the photos look printed!

See more of Emily's work.
